“Magic in the Gaeltacht” - Killarney Outlet Centre hosts Students’ Photographic Exhibition

From July 1st, Killarney Outlet Centre will host a photographic exhibition displaying the work of a group of nine second level students from Meanscoile Nua an Leith-Triúigh, Castlegregory. The exhibition entitled, “Magic in the Gaeltacht” comprises of 64 colour images which will be displayed in the Killarney Outlet Centre until August 5th.

The nine Meanscoile Nua an Leith-Triúigh students took part in the recent Documentary Photography Course, which was a series of four workshops that took place over a month. The aim of the course was a photographic exploration and documentation of the Dingle Peninsula – the people, places, and events, as seen through the eyes of these Transition Year students.

Meanscoile Nua an Leith-Triúigh has a distinct culture that promotes creativity and supports the development of each student’s talents. Kerry County Council Arts Office supported this work by funding Eileen O'Leary as Artist in Residence to the school. The Residency programme gives professionals the opportunity to work with young people and inspire them.

Eileen who worked with the students on the project said “It has been very exciting to work with the students this year, we took the opportunity that was afforded by Féile na Bealtaine in Dingle,to meet with, and photograph, artists in their studios, get to know them, to see them at work and document them in action. As a photojournalist I take the opportunity to inform them of the work I am engaged in in Lesotho, a developing country and the importance that photography plays in informing the community in Kerry about the issues and how they can become involved.”

Paul Sherry, Manager, Killarney Outlet Centre said “It is a pleasure for Killarney Outlet Centre to host this exhibition of work by some very talented students. Killarney Outlet Centre is home to many exhibitions, but we are especially proud of our young home grown talent. Their work adds a unique attraction to offer the many shoppers and visitors of the centre”

At the end of May, the photographs were displayed in the school for the students’ parents and friends to view. They will be displayed in the Killarney Outlet Centre until August 5th, and from there they will go to Cloghane where the local community will have the opportunity to see the work.
